NPL PLay - Weekend of September 13th & 14th

The Premier 95/96 Boys resumed NPL play this past weekend with a match on Saturday against JFC Elite at Ed Radice Sports Complex. On another very warm and humid late afternoon in Tampa the teams went at it with patience and poise early. TBU controlled possession for most of the first half but were unable to capitalize on a couple prime scoring opportunities. The score was 0-0 at the half. JFC came out in the 2nd half with a much higher tempo and quickly found the back of the TBU goal. 8 minutes later they added a second. Resiliency was the TBU motto for the afternoon as they attempted to mount a comeback. In the 81' TBU found half their answer on a corner served by Paul Gyorkos to the head of Seth Rinkevich near the far post. Seth played the ball down into the 6 yard box where a waiting Allan Lewis sent a rocket to the twine. With a mere 2 minutes left in the match, Jhonatan Da Silva sent a smoking cross off a free kick that found the head of a streaking Peter Andrusyszyn to knot the match at two. Final score 2-2. Way to battle back TBU.

Sunday's match brought Orlando City to town for a midday rematch. TBU struck quickly on a gem of a ball served over the top and down the middle by Paul Gyorkos. Paul's beauty found Allan Lewis in stride and Allan quickly buried it for the 1-0 lead. Orlando City answered in rather quick fashion and knotted it at 1. In the 37' Thomas Whiting received a ball at the top of the 18 yard box and as he entered for a shot he was taken down by the OCYS Keeper. The penalty kick was handled swiftly by the same Thomas Whiting. Again OCYS answered and tied it at 2. The teams went to seek shade at the half tied 2-2. Head Coach Eric Sims and Assistant Fabio Suarez again found some inspirational words for the team during halftime discussions because domination was the word of the day for the second half. Tampa Bay controlled play for nearly the entire second 45 minutes. In the 53' Jerson Camacho played a beauty to Allan Lewis who promptly finished in dazzling fashion. In the 89' Allan Lewis found Thomas Whiting waiting out front and the finish was just that. Final TBU 4 Orlando City 2.

Coach Sims was tracked down after Sunday's match and asked for a few comments on the weekend performance. "To come away with 4 points against Jacksonville United and Orlando City is a successful weekend. However giving up 4 goals in two games is not a way for us to win the NPL championship.  We committed way too many fouls in our defensive third which gave both teams a lot of unnecessary free kick opportunities.  However on the positive side our players are starting to maintain a pretty good fitness level, are playing hard for 90 minutes, and playing some good soccer as well.  I am extremely happy with the intensity our team has been playing with over the past few weeks and coming back from a 2 goal deficit in the second half shows that we are not a team that is going to quit.  7 points in 3 games puts us in good position at this point in the NPL and hopefully can continue to collect points in each of the remaining matches."
